Arnold Carl Henry Fick was born January 26, 1925, near Mapleton, Iowa. the son of John Carl Martin and Meta Christina Carolina (Meyer) Fick. He attended country school near Mapleton and went onto graduate at the age of 17 from Mapleton High School. He was drafted into the United States Army and was inducted March 30, 1945 at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He served his country in Italy and Iran, receiving the Army Occupation Medal, Meritorious Unit Award and the Wolrd War II Victory Ribbon. While home on leave from the service, Arnold was united in marriage to Violet Ruth Waderich on September 22, 1945 at the Fick family farm. He was honorably discharged November 26, 1946.

After Arnold's return home, the couple started farming in the Mapleton area and later in the Castana area for one year. In 1950, they bought their farm near Mapleteon where they continued to farm until their retirement in 1986, at which time they moved into town. Violet passed away February 20, 1997.

Arnold was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton where he served as an usher for several years. He was also a proud member of the American Legion Leslie Seaton Post #666 of Smithland, Iowa. He truly enjoyed his life's work as a farmer and appreciated the time he could find to go fishing, dancing and traveling. His best times, however, were those spent with his family and friends.

 

Those survivors left to cherish Arnold's memory include two daughters, Bonnie Scheer of Mapleton, Iowa and Debra Hesebeck and her husband, Darwin, of Manassas, Virginia; one son and his wife, Bruce and Pat Fick of Mitchellville, Iowa; six grandchildren, Michelle Pitzen and her husband, Troy, Mark Scheer and his fiance, Ann Harman, Brent Fick and his wife, Denise, Darin Scheer, Karie Fick and her friend, Jeff, and Carla Kolt, Kade, and Kyle Pitzen and Chelsea Johnson; five sisters, Ester Rickert of Mapleton, Iowa; Alta Patterson of Anthon, Iowa; Opal Maguire and her husband, Clair of Danbury, Iowa Dora Chellew and her husband Lowell, of Sioux City, Iowa and Wilma Siefker and her husband, Douglas, also of Sioux City; one brother-in-law and his wife, Leo and Mary Waderich of Hornick, Iowa and one sister-in-law and her husband, Hazel and Earl Johnson of Onawa, Iowa along with many other relatives and friends.

Along with his wife, Arnold was preceded in death by his parents and one borther, Wilfred, and brothers-in-law, Walter Rickert and Wayne Patterson.
